Acolytes are adults, young people, or older children who assist with Service processions by carrying the cross or torches, and otherwise assist the clergy and subdeacons with the Service.  Sometimes those who serve in this way are called "Altar Servers," or sometimes by their function, such as: crucifer," torch bearer," etc.  Children are eligible to be acolytes once they have reached the 3rd grade.
